A Donkey...

... doesn't bump into the same stone twice. Or.... As stupid as a pig's behind. Just two Dutch sayings describing.... ME!
Look what I did last winter
And look what I did now

There's two upsides:

- WeeWee's doll is getting a very chique handmade collection of FELT outfits
- I've discovered a yarn that felts easily and beautifully (Manos Silk Blend)

(It wasn't completely dumb ass by the way, I washed it at 30 degrees Celsius in a wool program, all other knitwear came out just fine.... have no clue what happened!)

ADVENTUROUS KNITTING

well, not thát adventurous, I just never knit two items on one circular before. My wee girl needed mittens and so I had me a perfect opportunity to learn a new skill. (thank you, for getting me started!) After the initial stream of curse words and putting (read: throwing) it down a couple of times (especially during casting on)
... I LOVED IT!
I'm definatly doing this again. I've always been a latent sock knitter (as in: I love sock knitting but it just never happens) and now I really need to make myself and my wee ones about a dozen pair of socks.

A small Hi!

'hi!'

It's been a while, I know. I've been exercising the art of mothership. It's a real wonder and I feel blessed with two very beautifull and sweet children. But -in all honesty- it's not a breeze, a piece of cake or a walk in the park... man, this is hard work. I knew it would be (actually thought it would be a little worse than it actually is) so I'm enjoying it with all it's challenges but I hardly get anything done outside caring for the two sprouts and making sure our house stays liveable and clean(ish).

The biggest challenge I had to face in a long time is taking Iep and Line ('Eep and Lee-na') to their check up at the childrens buro (it's a Dutch thing...) where they get measured, weighed and get some general check ups. Gosh, I don't think I've ever lost more sweat than in those 2,5 hours (...) Keeping them both happy and getting the 1,5 yr old to do certain things while holding a 4 wk old that's screaming... oi oi oi...

Anyhoo, knitwise, obviously not much news. I'm in a state of concept. That means that I'm mostly 'thinking' about knitting without actually doing it. I've got a lot of ideas for new designs and projects so I'm turning myself on with ideas and possibilities.
'One possibility; let them entertain each other...'

Meanwhile, my new studio looks more like a dump at the moment . All the unpacked boxes that are left over from the move have been dumped there untill further notice. So not much creativity going on there. Well, I guess some spiders are figuring out what outrageous webs they can make in the chaos...
It's ok though, I officially have maternity leave untill I say I don't anymore (quelle luxury!). So I'm of the hook. That is, just untill I get sick of the conceptual state I'm in. And I'm guessing that won't be too long.
Got to go now, as soon as I get that 'motherhood of two thing' under control(ish) I'll start some spectacular knitting....

Note to my students: I'll send you an email well in advance to let you know when the lessons start again. I'll post a message on my blog too.
Notitie voor mijn studenten: Ik stuur jullie ruim van te voren een mail om te laten weten wanneer de lessen weer beginnen. En ik zet een berichtje op de blog.
'another possibility; just clear up one of the kids
while you're doing something with the other...'

Breaky Breaky

These are some crazy and hectic times. I'm in my 34th week of the pregnancy and a week before we're moving house... Can you imagine? My little boy has become sick too so I'm getting my energy from wherever I can find it. Read: taking mini-naps while he's asleep and taking baths every morning. So far it's working. A lot of my energy comes from teaching. The ironic part is that this week are my last lessons before I go on maternity leave. But I guess if I plan it well, I'll just use that time to do more creative stuff at the new house and I'm sure that will boost my energy levels as well.
The BSJ I knitted using Manos Silky. I did a lot of math and swatching to make sure I could make it with just one skein. And I did it! I barely had enough material to sew op the seams (luckily there are just two...) it was a close call and very nerve wrecking at the end. But there was always this, a mouseclick away, so I was never in any real desparation... ;-)

In between the midst of dozens of boxes I've knitted the new baby a log cabin blanket and the baby surprise jacket by Elizabeth Zimmerman. The blanket was made by using this great guide and just winging it (read: knit, frog, knit, frog again, finally knit it right). I knitted it in stockinette stitch and added a hood so I can use it as a wrap as well. The yarn is a Kaffe Fasset design for Rowan, expensive but fantastic.

If you're interested in the details of these knits, you'll have to wait a wile or mail me, since I don't have enough time to 'ravel' them. But I will, some day...

For now, onto my last tuesdaynight lesson for a while.

here's the BSJ without the buttons.

Double Knitting (with free pattern)

I became aunt today for the first time, but to two wee ones!
Twins Steen (boy) and Venstre (girl) were born last night. I'm very proud of the tough mama-cookie who did all the hard work. This afternoon I'm going to visit them for the first time, I can't wait!!

I knit these two hats in one night. It's a very, very, very basic pattern (suitable for a first knit in the round project!) and fits newborns.

Finished size:
30cm / 12" (a bit smaller than the usual 13" newborn size since they're twins and usually twins come into the world a little smaller)

Materials:
Needles:
5mm/ #8 dpns

Yarn:
Pildar Partner Potiron (orange) and Ecorce (chocolate brown)
Tapestry needle

Gauge:
15x21 = 10cm/ 4"

Hat
CO48 sts on dpns.
Place marker and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
[Knit 1 round, Purl 1 round]*
Repeat * 2 more times

Change to St st (Knit all st every rnd) and work even untill piece measures 8 cm/ 3" from CO.

Shape crown: Dec as foll:
rnd 1: *K4, K2tog *repeat from* to end of round
round 2: Knit
round 3: *K3, K2tog *repeat from* to end of round
round 4: Knit
Cont to dec every other rnd in this manner, working 1 less st between decs each dec rnd until you've worked a rnd of K1, K2tog.
Knit 1 round
Next rnd: *K2tog; repeat from *
8 st remain. Break yarn, thread tail on a tapestry needle, draw through rem sts, pull tight and secure to WS of hat. Weave in loose ends.

Summer Knitting = Sweaty Hands

The shops have been refilled with Knit Kits...
In the heat of the French summer I've been working on this Phildar Baby Duffel Coat, once again from the Marie Claire Idées/ Phildar book; Knitting for Babies. I must have knitted every single pattern in that book... I just realy like the classic look they have, it's never out of fashion. I did use a fashionable color instead of the usual dark blue and went for petrol. It's knit with a bacteria repellent fabric (what that does, I have no idea... except for repelling bacteria...) called Oxygene, also by Phildar.
It's great for doing baby yoga!
I have thought long and hard before I decided to show you this picture. You see, in this blog I try to come across as a hip, young knitter.
Than what the '^&*^$#%' do I do in front of a caravan (...), knitting, while Boyfriend Dear reads, in slippers with socks...
I'm going to let you in on a secret...
Practicality won the match over coolness this summer!
I'm knitting Iep an orange hat btw for him to wear when the Dutch soccerteam played. (It didn't help much...)

Meanwhile I'm embroidering Space Invaders...
That's cool....
right?

Project Catwalk

First of all, thank you so much for all the lovely wishes, blessings and comments! Iep is now two weeks old and he's cuter than ever. Of course it's hard work and there's absolutely no knitting getting done, but my heart's pouring over with aah's and ooh's and love and fluffiness's. I'm a very proud mother.

I thought it was time to show you some of the knitting I've done for Iep with him modeling it.
Cardi from Marie Claire Idee's 'knitting for babies' in my own creative color match.
Hat from 'One Skein', very fun and quick to knit!

Blanket by SAS Knits It Again (just knit as you finish up your leftovers)

I'll post some more later on, not all has been photographed. Also I got loads of home-made pressies that I want to show you. It's so great being friends with knitters!! (Thanks Storm op Zolder (Storm in the Attic), Haakpoes and Ajour!) Storm op Zolder even baptised one of her colorways 'Iep' and it's for sale! I'm so proud!
The proud mother in this photo is not me, but my friend Karen. She had the same due date as me but gave birth to daughter Puck a week before I became Iep's mummy. I knit her the bee suit and here Puck's modeling it for us. Sooooo cute!

IT'S A BOY!

On sunday 07-10-07 at 11:55 am, Iep [pronounced Eep] was born, a healthy boy. 54cm long and weighing 4320 grams (!!).

We're very proud and over the moon (and back) (and back again) and are now very much enjoying our beautifull sprout and our little family.

Much more about this beautifull boy later on.

(much less important, but like a cherry on the cake... another one of my 'designs' came into this world this weekend. See Knitty and check out the extra pattern!! I'm a proud mother as well as a proud designer and guess what... tomorrow's my birthday too!! Could it get any better?)

Freakin' HUGE and/but very productive...

I'm very, VERY pregnant (4 days past my due date) and anxiously awaiting the arrival of the little sprout. So meanwhile I'll show you some FO's before I lack the time to do so.

But first... this...
Emma, who's blog I love to read, is from Stockholm. I love Stockholm, in fact, I love Sweden. And when I told her I wouldn't be going to Sweden on holiday this year because of my pregnancy, she suggested a swap to help me get 'a bit of Sweden' this summer anyway. How sweet is that?

This week her package came and she couldn't be more accurate with the stuff she chose, it's all very, very much to my taste and liking.

There's two skeins of Drops Alpaca (always a hit!) One light and one dark grey. Perfect for a hat or a baby sweater!
A very cool rattler, handmade by these people.
A T shirt that's so cool, sprout will have to wear a sweater to go with it.
Lovely natural soap, a scrub cloth and a brush, Swedish sauna style.
and some yummy candy.

Thank you so much Emma, I'm loving it! And meanwhile I'm working my behind off to get your Dutch-style package done in time. ;-)

And now for some FO's.

Starting with the baby's room that's completely finished now. The weather was a bit gloomy when I took the pictures, so you'll have to imagine some sun rays coming trough the window.
the clock closet and the white one used to be my grandmother's. She actually grew up with those pieces of furniture in her house so they're more than 80 yrs old!! I transformed them into a zebra and a yellow cab when I went away to college. That was about 15 years ago. Later I put them in my basement and redid the small one when I got this house with Boyfriend Dear. And now they're up for their third life and look in the baby's room. I love stuff that has a history to it. (and it's really cheap... ;-)
The crib is Boyfriend Dear's family crib that was first used when his mother was born. It has 'held' a lot of baby's since and is now ready for our little one. I ordered the fabric from this Swedish wool spinning plant. And ordered a blanket and a bear to go with it. I just love Swedish design! My MIL did the whole fabric thing, the sheets too, and Boyfriend Dear's grandfather and grandmother helped in putting it all together. A true family project, again with lots of history.
The idea of the branch on the wall hit me years and years ago. I found this branch about 3 yrs ago on a hiking trip, scrubbed it down and saved it. This tree themed baby room was the perfect moment for it to re-appear.
The idea of the wallpaper tree and birds was blatantly stolen from a Dutch designer. I spent about € 12,- instead of € 200,- because I cut and 'designed' it myself. (Hey, I had the time and didn't want to spent the money...) I used scraps I had lying around and free samples from the local DIY store. (Is that stealing? or using more samples than you need??)
Don't worry, besides all this decorating, there's been some knitting too. First this baby hat for a wee girl. It's my own design. I first made it just in case we'll have a baby girl. But then my good preggy friend Karen -we had the same due date- gave birth to Puck, a beautiful daughter, yesterday and I was more than happy to give it to her.
this suit I made a few months in advance. It's made of Lana Grossa's Bingo (100% merino) and it's the most expensive piece of clothing that I have for little sprout. Which is funny, come to think of it, because usually you'd think anything you make yourself is cheaper. Wrong! But I've really thought this one trough, it'll last for about 3 months because of the -rolled up sleeve design- and so it's worth it's money. Right? And hey, mommy made it, so that must be worth something too. Oh... ánd... all other baby knitwear I've done so far has been knit from stash... So I'm doing OK here. I think...

Since I took the picture I've added a huge coconut button. It looks really 'eco-cool'. I'll take a picture with button later.
Then there's this one. A blanket I've knit in one afternoon. No pattern, just knitting. OK, so I've used 15mm needles, but still...it's not all that small. I used bits of Drops Eskimo I had lying around, the green and blue are the hand dyed, hand spun Texel sheep wool I started using for this project and then frogged. And the green I bought from Ajour for a sweet price at the last Knit In Public BBQ.
Some more handy work...
This toy bag and stroller blanket made out of a piece of cheap fleece blanket and the fabric that's also used for the crib. And this mobile, in the forest theme of the room, designed by moi. I'm not really happy with the way it works and hangs and moves yet, I'm letting this one simmer in my brain for a while.

Right now I'm working on two gifts for two kids and I might start on a hat for myself. But let's hope I'll give birth first... I'm freakin' HUGE!!

What's the Buzzz?

My friend Karen has the EXACT same due date as I do and we've been preggy friends ever since we found out. We go to pregnancy yoga together and talk, mail and msn about e-ve-ry-thing baby. It's great to have someone around where you don't have to pace yourself in your excitement.

Karen told me that she and her boyfriend would love to have a bee suit for their baby. I'm sure there's a good reason, but I forgot. It might be just because it's so darn cute.
When she talked about the bee suit for the second time, I knew what to do.

I took a very angelic pattern from Marie Clare's baby book and transformed it into this buzzzing piece with hat to match.

I wanted to give it to her when the baby is born, but since our date is the same I can see all kinds of difficulties to be able to do that, so I decided to give it to her now. It's also really small so their sprout will probably only be able to wear it twice or so. I don't care, the look on Karen's face when she opened the package was all I needed...

Making stuff...

Hi there! I'm still here busy making stuff. Like a baby... and a lot of knitwear. I have been knitting, I have. I just never got round to posting about it. I chose to channel my energy into knitting rather than to write about it. Crazy though, with all this spare time on my hands now that I'm on maternity leave, you'd think I'd manage to do both... Well, I have no excuse, it just didn't happen. So I'm making up for it with a bunch of FO pictures.
I'm in the 39th week of my pregnancy, so it won't be long now. I can't believe how fast these last months have gone by. It's really hard to imagine that this kicking sprout inside me is going to turn into a real baby soon. I CAN'T WAIT!!
The blue and the multicolored cardi are from Marie Claire's baby knitwear book (dutch title: Babybreiwerk 50 modellen voor babykleertjes). The orange mini bolero is from One Skein and so is the little hat. If you want more info about the materials or other stuff, don't hesitate to mail me. It's just so boring to write about that stuff and I mostly used bits and pieces of yarn from my stash (of which I'm very proud... baby clothes make for great stash cleaning).

Next time I'll show you a buzzzing outfit I made for my friend Karen and a baby blanket I whipped up in one day (OK, they were 15mm needles, but still..)

So, now I'm back to my W.I.P, this little number from Garnstudio.com, great site for free patterns! Meanwhile I'll just wait for the baby to come (please baby, come, come!!) and knit merrily on!

FO Parade

Gosh, I wouldn't have guessed that being pregnant could mess up my social (and digital) life so much... I haven't been to the Stich 'n Bitch-group in about a month. My pregnancy yoga is also on tuesday nights and combining it seems harder than I thought. Also when your FIL has a birthday and one of your favorite artists is finally playing in town again... well, let's just say that I feel like a half knit sweater, not really complete and not really 'not there'.

The artist I'm talking about is Andrew Bird, I really really love his work, totally original and beautiful. I promised myself I'd go, I've been living a less rock and roll lifestyle than I'm used to and haven't really been missing it, but there's been a few shows that I just couldn't get myself to go to on the night itself, simply because a lack of energy.

I have to face it, I'm really preggy, It turned out to be a too long period to stand so I didn't make it trough the whole concert and my hips and back have been hurting ever since, but it was so good and I got the new CD to listen too at home. And to know that those tunes are amongst the first things my baby hears is very cool, it's a good start.

I'll get to the knitting soon, let me just get this of my chest, it may look like I'm complaining, but I'm not, I've never been happier and when today we saw the little sprout on the scan (ultrasound), bouncing around like a rubber ball, sucking his/her hand and yawning and when we heard that everything looked fine and healthy, who cares about anything else? Anything at all. So... knitting...

Well, I won't disappoint you, although I haven't been blogging or seeing my S'nB buddies much, I really have been knitting. I've been really productive I might add. So here it is, the FO Parade, the update of what I've been upto.

Of course there's Tempting II, I've finished this baby a while ago but didn't find the time to post. The neckline was about as easy as learning to speak Chinese (I imagine) and about as fun as waiting in line at the post office while sweaty and loud people surround you (no fun...). I followed the pattern and after about 2 creative solutions, or more like -attempts-, my head bulb lighted up and I checked for errata online. Turns out this baby has a neckline problem. Who knew... I couldn't find any solutions though and so I K2TOG and K-ed en P-ed with all the creativeness I could harvest and it worked. Well, it worked partly, I really wanted a low neckline (to show off my cleavage 'show 'em if you've got 'em') but it turned out too high. By this point I was so frustrated with it that I left it like that.

Oh I need to remind you, I knit Tempting I in a cotton that was so droopy that even if I was pregnant of quadruplets it would still be too big. This time I made a wiser choice and went with Phildar's Legende, a tweed/alpaca mix. It was great, maybe a wee bit scratchy but overall a good choice. I knit a swatch and knit it just a little too small since it's a stretchy design and the pattern warned me about it. And still... too big... it's starting to become a serious problem, I'm knitting everything too big and I can't figure out what goes wrong. So now, to end all the drama, I've decided to clear away from big projects for now and stick with smaller patters or projects that may vary in size like bags and blankets. There's noting as frustrating as trying on a piece that you've been working at for months (that lóóked ok) that's too big (agaín...).

Luckily baby's are small.
This is me with my 21 week big belly, the fact that the sweater's too big has it upsides too, I'll be able to wear it while carrying Sprout.

Onto the next FO. These are the socks that I've knit from the Magic Ball Swap. The pattern came with it They were my first socks that weren't your basic K/P socks and I needed to adjust the pattern. That wasn't easy, but with help (thank you Constance and Ajour) I figured a lot of stuff out while learning about sock logic in general. I'm really happy with the result and I only wear them at special occasions. Read: when I can brag with them... More socks, but smaller. These are from the latest Phildar baby catalogue. I've knit them for my colleague Anne. She's expecting a baby one week later than I am. I used Phildar Bamboo, great stuff to touch, not so great to knit with because of all the different threads. But then again, great looking when finished! And yes, yes, yes, finally I finished the lace scarf that has been eating dust and growing live things in a corner for the last months. I don't know what came over me, I just had had enough, it had to get finished. I'm wearing it with pride while ignoring the obvious mistake in row 10...
And here's a quickie I did last weekend for my MIL. It started out as a cushion but because of the lack of yarn turned quickly into a handbag. I knit it with a cheap acrylic yarn (don't tell anyone) on 10mm needles and it took me about a day. It's my own design, brutally stolen from the beret from the winter issue of Interweave Knits (the beret that turned out way too big as well...) and very simple I'll write out the pattern for a following post.

And onto the baby-stuff. Here's one other bamboo sock from the Phildar catalogue and a vintage soaker (don't know the real word). Very rewarding projects, each done in a night.

And? Productive or what? Right now I'm working on a stole that might work as a baby blanket too, it's my own design and made with yarn my SIL gave me last weekend; a pink, fluffy kid mohair/wool-mix. I'm working on some ideas for embroidery with little pearls to jazz it up.

And there's the baby blanket from Handknits for Kids that I'm still working on and looks like I will be for the next 5 years... it's fun to knit but I have to be able to concentrate and that's where the problem lies...
